Worth every penny?

October 29th, 2013 at 05:29 am

Saw a funny news report on the today show this morning: there are some things worth every penny and not worth the guilt including a really great mattress, sheets with a high thread count, strong tires and plushy toilet paper.

What are things you buy worth every penny?

Plushy toilet paper? I have to disagree there. I go on drilling rigs fairly often, and the paper there is more like a paper towel, but my butt has never complained. On occasion, I get a few nether rumblings about the food, though. Wink
I say that high-quality furniture is worth it, because you'll keep it longer. If you like to redecorate every three years, or you move every few years, then buy the cheap stuff and replace it rather than move it.

Energy things: High efficiency washer (there's no such thing as a high efficiency dryer, so don't waste the money); Good siding (I prefer Hardie Plank); High quality air conditioner down south; Lots of attic insulation; sound and temperature blocking windows (they don't pay on resale value unless you have very poor windows). My energy use in my house is about $100 per month. It was over $400 per month when I first moved in. Every month, I average a $300 return on my investments. It might take 10 years to break even, but after that, I'm pretty much making $300 per month (or more if energy prices go up). I'd say I'm in the equivalent of year 7 or 8 now, so break even is imminent.

Non-energy things: A good vacuum cleaner; good tools if you're a handyman or backyard mechanic; shoes that fit and are right for your feet (learned this one late).

Lastly, a good woman (the women here might edit that slightly for their point of view).

Plushy toilet paper for sure! I personally think one ends up using more of the cheap stuff because it is so thin, therefore, you end up buying more. Maybe it evens out in the end?

I like the plushy tp, too. Also worth every penny -- good carpeting, good coffee, good shoes.

I go medium on tp, since you're asking.

I agree about energy efficiency upgrades being worth every penny. You save money, and you are more comfortable. Let alone that carbon footprint. We insulated the walls and attic of our house and love it, of course, the utility paid for half of it as part of an efficiency plan so they could meet demand without building a new energy plant.

I would say garden seeds, plants, and soil are worth every penny and pay you back.

Delicious fresh food. I pay $3.25 for one donut or $9 for a small piece of cake, because if I am going to consume 500-700 calories in a dessert, it better be the best donut everywhere and be worth every single calorie.

"Maybe it evens out in the end?"

I refuse to go for the cheap "in the end" joke, but I'm sorely tempted.

Good food is worth every penny. Personally I don't like plushy toilet paper because I don't think it cleans effectively and it gets used up too quickly.

I think softer toilet paper is more a female thing than a male thing. I mean the majority of the time a man uses the bathroom it's two shakes and they are done. Not so with women, and it can start to feel like sandpaper. Not to mention that the cheaper brands of TP use a pretty harsh bleach for whitening. Does it have to be the most plush on the market, no, but it doesn't need to be one-ply with those bumpy designs, either. Still, you can pry my Charmin from my cold, dead hands. Although Angel Soft and MD will do.

So I agree with TP and the mattress and will add quality shoes and Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo for oily hair. And quality food, yes.
